Symptom, likely cause, and what it usually costs

Most AC faults come down to a handful of parts. Here’s what we see most, and what each typically runs.

What it’s doingUsually meansTypical range
Runs but blows warm airCapacitor or contactor failed$150 – $350
Outdoor fan not spinningCapacitor or condenser fan motor$350 – $700
Weak airflow from ventsBlower motor, or a filter clogged solid$450 – $900
Water pooling near the indoor unitBlocked condensate drain line$125 – $250
Ice on the refrigerant linesLow refrigerant or restricted airflow — turn the system off now. Running it iced up can destroy the compressor.$400 – $1,500
Nothing happens at allTripped breaker, failed contactor, or thermostat$99 – $300
Short cycling — on and off constantlyOversized system, low refrigerant, or a failing control boardvaries
Burning smellShut it off at the breaker and call immediately. Electrical fault — do not keep running it.

Two of these are stop-now situations: ice on the lines, and any burning smell. Switch the system off at the breaker and call. Everything else can wait for an appointment.

Specific repairs we handle

AC refrigerant leak repair

A system low on refrigerant has a leak — refrigerant isn’t consumed. Topping it up without finding the leak is money you’ll spend again next summer. We locate the leak first, then quote the repair and the recharge separately so you can see what you’re paying for.

AC condenser repair

The outdoor unit takes the worst of a North Texas summer. Fan motors, capacitors and contactors are the usual failures, and all three are same-visit repairs in most cases.

AC compressor replacement

The most expensive single component. Before we quote one, we’ll check whether the system is still under warranty and run the repair-versus-replace numbers with you — on an older system a compressor often signals it’s time to stop spending.

Thermostat repair and replacement

Sometimes the system is fine and the thermostat isn’t. Cheapest possible outcome, and worth ruling out first — which is part of what the $99 diagnostic covers.

When we’ll tell you not to repair it

Apply the $5,000 rule: system age × repair cost. Over $5,000 and replacement usually wins.

Frisco’s housing stock skews new — a lot of it went up in the 2000s and 2010s — which means a large number of original systems are hitting fifteen to twenty years right now. That’s the age where a $1,500 – $3,000 compressor on a seventeen-year-old system is throwing good money after bad.

We’ll show you the maths. If replacing is the better call, we’ll say so, and you can decide without being sold to.
