If your AC is running but blowing warm air, the cause is almost always one of seven things — and two of them you can fix yourself in about five minutes. Start with the thermostat and the air filter before you call anyone.

Check these two first (free, 5 minutes)

1. The thermostat is set to ON, not AUTO. On ON, the blower runs constantly even when the system isn't cooling — so you get room-temperature air between cycles. Switch it to AUTO and give it ten minutes.

2. The air filter is clogged solid. A blocked filter starves the system of airflow. Pull it out and hold it up to a light. If you can't see light through it, replace it. In North Texas that's often every 30–60 days in summer, not the 90 days on the packet.

The five causes that need a technician

3. Low refrigerant from a leak. Refrigerant isn't consumed — if you're low, you have a leak. Topping it up without finding the leak means paying again next summer.

4. A failed capacitor or contactor. The outdoor unit doesn't start, so nothing gets cooled, but the indoor blower keeps pushing air. Common and relatively cheap.

5. A tripped breaker on the outdoor unit. Many homes have a separate breaker for the condenser. Indoor blower on, outdoor unit dead.

6. Frozen evaporator coil. Ice blocks airflow completely. See the section below.

7. A failing compressor. The expensive one, and usually the point where repair-versus-replace becomes a real conversation.

Switch it off now if…

You see ice on the refrigerant lines. Running an iced system can destroy the compressor — turn it off at the thermostat, leave the fan on to thaw it, and book a visit.

You smell burning. Shut it off at the breaker and call immediately. That's an electrical fault, not a cooling fault.

Roughly what the repair costs

Capacitor or contactor work is usually the cheapest outcome. A refrigerant leak — locate, repair and recharge — sits in the middle. A compressor is the expensive end. We publish our actual ranges rather than making you call to find out.
